Top 10 Best Selling Wii U Games List

best selling wii u games

Nintendo recently updated their list top 10 best selling Wii U games, located on their investors relations webpage. All of the top 10 best selling Wii U games are titles published by Nintendo, and feature recognizable franchises like Mario and Zelda. Two of the games listed below are based on new / original ideas – Splatoon and Mario Maker. In July Nintendo stated that their goal originally was to sell about 100 million Wii U units. So far the console is well below Nintendo’s original goal, sitting at about 13.5 million units sold. Below is the best selling Wii U games since the console launched in 2012.

#10 – Mario Party 10 – 1.94 Million Sold

Coming in at 10th place is Mario Party 10. The Wii U’s 10th best selling game is also the 10th main entry in the Mario Party series. Utilizing Nintendo’s Amiibo and Wii U gamepad, the coach party game also saw an amiibo bundle version featuring Mario, Peach, Toad and Bowser. Mario Party 10 is compatible with amiibos in the Super Mario Series line-up, which will soon include a Rosalina, Waluigi, Wario, Boo, Daisy and other Mario world amiibo.

#9 – The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD – 1.98 Million Sold

The HD version of a Gamecube classic, Zelda Wind Waker HD comes in at 9th place. Everything in this game has been remastered, and includes a special Hero’s dungeon and other challenges for veteran players. The Wii U’s version of Wind Waker transitioned well from the Gamecube, with the graphics seemingly built for the current era of gaming – not 2003! While Nintendo did remove some features in the HD version (like using your GBA Gamecube link cable to utilize Tingle) other features like the Miiverse message bottle helped to make up for any missing features.

#8 – New Super Luigi U – 2.74 Million Sold

Released during the Year of Luigi, New Super Luigi U is the 8th best selling Wii U game. Back when it first released the game was only available on the Wii U eShop. It didn’t take Nintendo long to re-release the game as a full retail product – which they priced at $19.99 originally. The game features re-designed levels from New Super Mario Bros. U, but with some twists. You play as Luigi, and the levels are only 99 seconds long. To make things more difficult Nintendo designed every level to be as hard as possible, giving us an awesome platformer with some true difficulty.

#7 – Super Mario Maker – 3.73 Million Sold

Super Mario Maker might be one of the best titles on the Wii U for replay value. Not only can you design an infinite amount of levels, but you have access to thousands of levels uploaded by the Super Mario Maker community. Recently Nintendo announced that Super Mario Maker would be coming to the 3DS, hopefully Nintendo will include all the features that made the Wii U version so successful.

#6 – Splatoon – 4.57 Million Sold

Splatoon is one of those risky long-shots, at least that’s what it felt like when it was announced for the Wii U. Taking the 4 vs 4 pvp (player vs player) concept to a new level, Nintendo proved that not all shooters have to be full of violence. Splatoon is one of the best titles on the Wii U, offering addictive matchmaking online with a variety of battle modes. The family friendly shooter was supported with free updates for months after it released, gaining dozens of new weapons, maps and accessories.

#5 – Super Smash Bros. Wii U – 4.99 Million Sold

The 5th best selling Wii U game is Super Smash Bros for the Wii U. Featuring the largest character roster in the series history. The robust matchmaking, amiibo support and level editor is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to describing all the features included in Super Smash Bros for the Wii U. Nintendo also released a version for the 3DS, but our favorite is still the Wii U version.

#4 – Nintendo Land – 5.13 Million Sold

Nintendo Land originally released when the Wii U launched in 2012. Included with the Wii U Deluxe console edition, Nintendo Land attempted to be the Wii U’s version of Wii Sports, by showcasing the unique capabilities of the systems controller. While not reaching the same stats as Wii Sports, Nintendo Land did manage to become the Wii U’s 4th best selling title.

#3 – Super Mario 3D World – 5.19 Million Sold

A day-one launch title, New Super Mario Bros. U marks a return to the time when a new Nintendo console would have a Mario game on day one. With dozens of levels and 4-player support, New Super Mario Bros. U is one of the best 2D platformers to grace the system. Along with the release of New Luigi U – Wii U owners have one of the best selections for 2D Mario platforming.
