One example Nintendo showcased was a Super Mario amiibo figurine, which when scanned over the Wii U gamepad can unlock a new gaming experiences for the player. Amiibo characters have the ability to unlock different things in different Nintendo games. The same Mario figurine may unlock a power move in the next Smash Bros, while providing different custom parts in Mario Kart 8. Amiibo also has the ability to save data on each figurine. For instance in Super Smash Bros for the Wii U players can scan their amiibo’s into the game. Doing so allows the amiibo figurine to increase its attack and defense stats while learning new fighting tactics. So far Nintendo is planning 10 figurines for amiibo. The release date for the amiibo is set for the 2014 holiday season. Nintendo also commented that the company is hopeful that the amiibo line of characters will outlast the Wii U and 3DS. Nintendo of America’s Reggie stated in Nintendo’s E3 digital event that the Amiibo project is one of Nintendo’s biggest incentives for the future.
