Eba & Egg: A Hatch Trip Review for Wii U

Review Eba & Egg Wii U

This is a review for Eba & Egg: A Hatch Trip for the Wii U. A complimentary review copy was provided to us by the developer Agile Drill Games. You can purchase Eba & Egg: A Hatch Trip directly off the Nintendo eShop by clicking here.

Eba & Egg: A Hatch Trip is a creative action platforming game that plays like many games in the “Runner” genre. Eba & Egg: A Hatch Trip expands on the runner genre by having the player control two characters at the same time. Like Bit Trip Runner, the player only has certain control over the main character(s) movements. Eba and the egg move forward without any input from the player. Eba rides on top of the egg as it rolls forward. The player’s goal is to avoid any obstacles like pits, spikes and other dangers while attempting to reach the stages end. One button makes Eba jump, while a different button makes the egg jump. This concept is simple but makes for some fast paced platforming fun. For instance, when a stage starts to split into two different sections the player must quickly have Eba jump-up to the higher section while the egg continues rolling through the bottom section. Using the egg’s jump with Eba riding on top and using Eba’s jump at the height of the egg’s jump can allow the player to reach new sections or items in the stages. (See our YouTube video for Eba & Egg: A Hatch Trip). If either Eba or the egg hit any obstacles the player is brought back to an earlier checkpoint or to the start of the level.

The story centers on the bird Eba and his brother or sister who’s still in a egg. The main goal is to get through the games 25 levels to hatch the egg. Each stage has a high score that can be saved.

Graphically Eba & Egg: A Hatch Trip uses a retro inspired look. The stages look colorful and fun. There are certain elements in the background/foreground that can confuse the player. Sometimes we’d jump over something that looked like an obstacle to find that it was just an element of the background. The stages are put into sets, with each set containing different color schemes, backgrounds and other art. Overall our review team was pretty impressed by the look of the game.

The music in Eba & Egg: A Hatch Trip is well designed. Full of bubbly retro-inspired tunes, the music fits with the games graphics and overall gameplay concept.

There are parts of the game that have some small glitches. For instance, one stage had spikes that we ran into but failed to kill Eba or the egg. Other glitches include areas where only Eba or the egg can squeeze through, but resulted in both somehow moving through the narrow ceiling. These are small glitches, and don’t affect the gameplay that bad.

“Eba & Egg: A Hatch Trip brings liquid smooth platforming with well designed retro-inspired graphics and music. It also provides the Wii U with one of the best “Runner” games since Bit.Trip Presents… Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien released in 2013.”
