In a statement to IGN, Nintendo confirmed that the Switch won’t play physical copies of Wii U and 3DS games. This marks a break from console / handheld trends for Nintendo, who’s supported backwards compatibility since the days of the Gamecube / Wii. IGN also asked Nintendo if the Switch would be backwards compatible with digital Wii U & 3DS games, Nintendo replied with “Nothing to announce on this topic”.

There’s a good chance the Nintendo Switch will be backwards compatible with Wii, Wii U and 3DS digital titles overtime. The prospects offered by emulation at least makes supporting digital games more reasonable. It makes sense that the Nintendo Switch isn’t compatible with past Wii U & 3DS games (retail versions). The Switch is using a new cartridge format for it’s medium of choice, thus making backwards compatibility less likely. Who knows, maybe Nintendo will re-release most of it’s Wii U and 3DS game catalog on the Switch. What do you think of this latest development. Let us know using the comments below.
