So I posted earlier about getting calls from the Law Offices of Craig S. Sunada, and I wanted to give an update because things have gotten more intense.
They’ve called me 4 times in the last 2 days from (714) 480-0800. I finally answered yesterday and the person on the line was very pushy. They said I owed money on an old credit card account but when I asked for details, they seemed vague. They kept pushing me to make a payment “right now” over the phone with my bank info.
I told them I needed to see proof of the debt first and asked them to mail me a validation letter. The rep got noticeably frustrated and said if I didn’t pay immediately, they’d “have to escalate” and mentioned legal action. That honestly scared me at first, but I held my ground and said I wouldn’t discuss anything until I got written verification.
Here’s what I’ve learned since then that I wish I knew before:
Red flags I’m noticing:
They wouldn’t give me any account details in writing before demanding payment
They pressured me to pay immediately without giving me time to verify
They mentioned “escalation” as a threat, which felt like intimidation
Steps I’m taking now:
I’m sending a formal dispute letter via certified mail today – I found out I have 30 days from their first contact to request validation
I’m keeping a log of every call with dates, times, and what was said
I’m NOT giving them any bank account info or making any payments until I see proof
I checked my credit report to see if this debt even shows up (it doesn’t, which is interesting)
My big question to you all: Has anyone actually dealt with this specific firm before? Are they known for being aggressive like this? I’m trying to figure out if this is legitimate or if they’re just hoping I’ll pay something I don’t actually owe.
Also, what happens if they can’t provide proof of the debt? Do they have to stop calling? I’ve read they can’t continue collection efforts without validating the debt, but I’m not sure how strictly that’s enforced.
I’m located in [your state] and I’m not sure if that matters for the statute of limitations. The debt they mentioned seemed old but I honestly can’t remember if it’s mine or not – it’s been years.
Any advice on how to handle this next step would be amazing. I’m trying to stay calm but the constant calls are stressing me out. Should I just block their number or is that a bad move if this is legit?
Thanks everyone for the support on my last post – reading your responses really helped me stay firm when they called.
