GUID partition table vs. MBR are two methods of partitioning a disk used for data organization on a disk drive. GPT, being the newer method, not only supports very large disks over 2TB but also multi-partition. Moreover, it can provide backup copies of partition tables for greater reliability and recovery. MBR is the older partitioning format that is limited to 2TB disks and can only have a maximum of 4 primary partitions. The location of MBR’s partition information is centralized, thus making it vulnerable to corruption. GPT is compatible with UEFI firmware, and MBR is the format of choice in legacy BIOS systems. For modern computers and large storage devices, GPT is the more versatile, reliable, and safe choice in most cases.
