Sega 3D Classics Collection Review For 3DS

I was very excited to write a review for Sega 3D Classics Collection on the 3DS. I grew up playing the Sega Genesis, and have gotten to know many of the franchises that built the Sega of the 80’s and 90’s. The Sega 3D Classics Collection comes packed with 7 classic games and 2 bonus games. The games are all retro ports, and are some of the best from Sega history. There’s something for everyone in this compilation: Power Drift, Puyo Puyo 2, Fantasy Zone II W, Sonic the Hedgehog, Thunder Blade, Galaxy Force II, Altered Beast and the two bonus games Fantasy Zone II and Maze Walker. Some of these games have released on the 3DS in single download form on the eShop, but this is the first time that Puyo Puyo 2 and Power Drift are releasing on the 3DS. While I’m not going to review each an every game in Sega 3D Classics Collection I am going to review the entire collection as a whole. All of the games included in this release have been around for decades, so I’m going to focus on the 3D features and anything else that makes this a worthy buy for the customer.

The main selling point of Sega 3D Classics Collection is the 3D effect of the 3DS. Sega’s retro games look great in 3D, oftentimes popping out of the screen. I especially enjoyed Galaxy Force II and Power Drift, both of which impressed me the most with their use of the 3D effect. Overall this is one of the finest retro 3DS games I’ve seen in a while, with just the right amount of immersion from the 3D screen.

Because it comes with some many classic Sega games the replay value is high in my opinion. Several different genres are included, from puzzle, side-scrolling platforming, shooters, brawler and racing. Almost everyone can find something in this compilation that they can enjoy. Every game has different toggle options in a special menu. I found some of these options interesting, others not so much. For instance in Sonic the Hedgehog you can turn on & off  Sonic’s spin charge, which isn’t available in the original Sonic on the genesis.

To make the game more accessible Sega included a Save / Load feature in every game in the collection. This does make completing the different (often times difficult) games easier, especially for players who’ve never played one of these classics before.

Overall the Sega 3D Classics Collection supplies hours of entertainment. The idea of buying another compilation of retro games may not be for everyone, but with the 3D graphics and small little options like saving and loading anyone with a passion for retro Sega will enjoy these games in all their new 3D glory.
