Focus on the Government Shutdown, Not Gender Diversity! Oh, and one more thing, please leave Donkey Kong (and all video games) out of the Trans/Gender Diversity Debate!
With the current government shutdown now the longest in U.S. history you’d think that a freshman senator would have more pressing things to worry about than gender diversity and blaming billionaires for all the world’s problems. Not so for newly elected congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who’s spent her first few weeks in government advertising herself along with her democratic-socialist viewpoints. While taking part in dozens of interviews, on talk shows and on social media, the newly elected senator has already made a fool of herself by several things she’s said (including the world is going to end in 12 years).
While most senators spend their first few weeks in office setting up a local contact office in the district their elected from, having orientation on capital hill etc, the new congresswoman from New York has been more busy pushing her socialist opinions while demonizing anyone who disagrees or challenges her (lookup what she says about people who fact check her)! Yesterday (1/22/2019) Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined a YouTube personality who goes by the name Hbomberguy (who raised over $340,000) to raise funds for Mermaids (group that supports gender diverse/transgender youth in the UK). While giving a quick history of her own gaming experience as a child Senator Ocasio-Cortez championed her opinions on transgender rights.
“It’s a no-brainer. Trans rights are civil rights are human rights,” – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
While I have no problem that she’s got an opinion on the issue, I do take offense that she used a video game live stream using a Nintendo game to make her point. Here’s my opinion, Nintendo would rather their games weren’t used in controversial topics like transgender rights, same-sex marriage etc. Nintendo’s company culture is very orthodox Japanese. Look at the controversy with same-sex marriages in games like Tomodachi Life for the 3DS or Harvest Moon. Nintendo has consistently said no to non-traditional marriage & relationships. Just look at the gay community back when Tomodachi Life released, they condemned Nintendo to hell just for not offering same-sex relationships in the game.
If she or the YouTuber (Hbomberguy) had done any homework they’d realize that Nintendo has not openly supported transgender causes or gay-marriage – in fact it looks more like the opposite. I just think its inappropriate to use content from an entity who refuses to cater to every social whim spouted by the left.
